SPITE
A downloadable game
Sometimes, you're spiting a monster. Sometimes, you're spiting yourself.
Sometimes, those are the same thing.
SPITE is a solo journaling game based on the Wretched and Alone and Breathless SRDs, and utilising the Twist mechanic from the Second Guess System.
In this game, you're trying to defeat the creature that smiles at you from your reflection, no matter the cost. If you let It, It will eat your Past, your Present, and your Future.
Unless you eat them first.
- A standard deck of 52 playing cards
- A d10, d8, d6, and d4
- A way to record your game. If you’re using audio or video, you’ll also need a pen and paper for your character sheet.
- A mirror. Preferably one large enough to stand on its own.
- Something to eat. Choose something with crunch that’s easy to count or otherwise chop up. You will need 10 pieces.
This is a game about going too far, about the lines we cross in pursuit of a goal, about teetering over a precipice and deciding to take the chance we might not fall.
And then falling.
This is also a game about the harm we can do to ourselves, whether with thought or word or action or sharp edge, as well as the loss of self. Autocannibalism is a mechanic. Whether that’s metaphorical or literal is up to you, but either way food and hunger are a constant undercurrent. Please keep all of this in mind and pace yourself as you play. If a prompt makes you uncomfortable, feel free to ignore it and write your own or pull another card.
Remember that walking away is always an option.
It may, in fact, be the only option.

What age range would you recommend for the players?
This is genuinely the best journaling game I've ever played! Absolutely riveting, it kept me captivated through the whole game and having crunchy foods as a mechanic got me completely and utterly immersed. I couldn't ask for more!
Thank you so much for giving SPITE a try! So glad you enjoyed it - and also that you survived your mirror self long enough to leave a comment!
Extremely interesting and innovative combination of Wretched&Alone with Breathless! One note, though - in a deck of playing cards, J generally stands for Jack, not Joker (of which there are two). Drawing “all four Jokers” was a very confusing phrase the first time I saw it.
Oh, much appreciated, thank you! I think I know stuff in English and then get tripped up by the silliest things. Lemme go fix that real quick.
I should say, it was seeing the Untitled Moth Game for the first time that made the lightbulb go off in my head and go, "Wait, you can do that?" re: combining things, so thank you as well for the kind comment, and also in a roundabout way for the inspiration!
I’m honored to have been an indirect inspiration! Especially for a game that delves deliciously into some of my favorite themes and tropes.
After reading the new version, I have some more questions about how the rules work. Is there a better way to send those over to you than through Itch comments?
Oh yes, I can send you my email or discord if you like? I do believe I follow you on tumblr, so I can drop those in a DM, unless you prefer elsewhere.
That sounds great, thank you!
